CenterPointe Hospital Fall Conference 2018 - Addiction is a Family Disease

Addiction is considered to be, on average, heritable about 50 percent of the time (Journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics). Addictions are a diverse set of common, complex diseases that are to some extent tied together by shared genetic and environmental etiological factors. Genetic studies and other analyses clarifying the origins of addiction help destigmatize addiction, leading to more prompt treatment. Knowledge of genetic factors in etiology and treatment response may enable the individualization of prevention and treatment, as well as the identification of new therapeutic targets.

Families with alcohol and drug problems also have high levels of distress causing family members to assume roles initially adapted for survival but inevitably become self-destructive, e.g., enabling roles make excuses for all behaviors which cause the dysfunction to continue. People become familiar with and dependent upon the role they play in families. The goal of addiction treatment is to make each family member WHOLE. Overcoming family roles is the key to family recovery.

This conference will discuss the unwanted inheritance of addiction and reframe clinical conceptualization to include a compassionate way of thinking about the family experience of addiction, as well as offer healing activities for families.
